CHARACTER NAME: Unknown; Goes by Anders
FANDOM: Dragon Age
AGE: Late thirties
HEIGHT: 6'2
WEIGHT: 160 lbs
APPEARANCE:
Anders is a man who desperately wants to be free. Body, mind, and soul, Anders aches for a time when he can live without being hunted down, and do as he pleases; once commenting that all he wants is a 'good drink, fine women, and the ability to shoot lightning at fools'. At his heart, this is who Anders is, even if life refuses to allow him to have such things.
Ever since childhood, Anders has been on the run from the remarkably persistent Templars. Making at least seven and up to around a dozen escapes, Anders has had his share and more of punishments and being locked up. After his second-to-last escape, Anders was locked in isolation for a year, his only company a mouser named Mr. Wiggums (A cat later possessed by a Rage Spirit that killed three Templars) and the occasional kick to the head. On his last escape, he met the Warden Commander, who conscripted him for his power against the last vestiges of the Fifth Blight. This was much to Rolan's, a vengeful Templar, upset.
In the Warden's Company, Anders is cheeky, funny, sometimes perverted, and picks on the more serious members of the party. He jokes around often, and sometimes bickers with Ohgren and Nathaniel Howe. Upon meeting the Spirit of Justice in the Dead Grey Warden, Kristoff's, body, Anders introduces Justice to the Mage's plight, and the Spirit agrees that there is no greater wrongdoing than what the mages suffer.
When Awakenings ends, Anders and Justice merge (Kristoff's decaying body no longer holding up for him) at the same time Rolan has infiltrated the Grey Wardens. Unfortunately, at being met with a living soul, the reaction is not pleasant. It seems that Anders has momentarily lost control from the joining, and when Rolan attempts to once again capture him, Anders ends up getting stabbed through the chest and killing everyone around him, Grey Warden and Templar alike. There is mention of Anders cannibalizing some of those he killed before he ran from the Wardens, saying there was no place for him there. He is rumored to have joined the famous captain Isabela's crew after that and arriving in Kirkwall about a year before the Champion did.
When Anders is next met, he is cold and calloused, hostile against Hawke and their companions. He no longer jokes, and only a bare minimum of his personality from before can be seen at all. He is determined and straightforward, though is still reserved and cautious of Justice, which he now believes has been warped into a spirit of Vengeance. Tainted by Anders' total hatred for Templars and the Circle, Justice had been turned and many times influences Anders' decisions and personality. It is believed that Anders' personality shift comes from this as well as the repeated hunting from the Templars. after leaving the Grey Wardens, Anders had been officially branded an Apostate.
One thing that does not change, is Anders' compassion for the needy and the sick. A hero at heart, Anders has opened and run a free clinic from his own threadbare pockets and can never ignore an innocent in need. Whether it be using extensive knowledge of normal wraps, splints and herbalism, Anders also has spirit healing, which he is seen using multiple times. From a kind person like Hawke to the brooding and hateful Fenris, Anders will heal most everyone from any wounds no matter what his thoughts are on them.
He is also quite well-known for his outspokenness about the Mage's situation, and his manifestos speaking out against the Circle and Templars. He constantly leaves them around Hawke's estate, asking for Hawke to join him in the fight against the Chantry. During the travels around Kirkwall and the surrounding areas, Anders never passes up a chance to speak for the Mages trapped int he Circle. Oftentimes he will scold Hawke if he makes anti-mage sentiments and sometimes begins verbal fights with Fenris and other characters. This leads to some tension between Anders and the rest of the group, but he gets on well and is useful enough that none of the other members take action against his sometimes aggressive personality.
Anders' sometimes tumultuous relationship with the Spirit in his body confuses and alarms him frequently. He confides in Hawke multiple times that as it is Vengeance now, he does not know what it is that will trigger the spirit. This comes to light most prominently when he almost kills the mage girl, Ella, for calling him a demon. He regrets joining with Justice with so little thought, as he knows now that the Spirit could not be contained by a living soul with a mind and wishes of its own. "Justice is hard" he says, commenting on the fact that Justice would do whatever was necessary. This is better shown if Anders is romanced and comments that Justice is upset about Hawke being "a distraction". Nothing is more important to Justice than its mission.
In the issue of personal relationships, Anders seems rather upset whenever it's mentioned. When romanced, Anders tells Hawke that mages cannot have lovers or significant others, because it's just one more thing that the Templars can use against them. While he talks openly in Awakenings about quick trysts the mages have (Making lewd commentary about his robes while he's at it), they are denied solid relationships on the basis that having someone to care about is a weakness. However, he does form tenuous friendships with other companions. He and Aveline get along well enough for her to not arrest him, Varric and he are decent companions, and occasionally tease each other. Isabela and Anders don't have anything to bicker about, usually, and they sometimes chat about when he sailed with her after leaving the Grey Wardens. Merrill and Fenris are different stories, however.
Anders absolutely loathes blood magic. After he made his deal with Justice, he cannot condone anyone else making the same mistake he did. As Merrill is a blood mage, she and Anders sometimes bicker, though Merrill is far more at peace with herself and her demon than Anders ever will be. Fenris and Anders, however, hate each other through and through. Fenris despises mages and Anders despises Fenris for his abject hatred of mages despite their similar situations. Often times attempting to get the approval of one greatly decreases standing with the other.
Anders can be a kind or vindictive man, with the capability of saving or damning someone in the same breath. He is a loyal man when he wants to be, and sometimes his dry sarcasm can be interpreted incorrectly or cruelly. while he does tend to get on nerves and upset others, his abilities make him more or less indispensable for the most part. Thankfully, hawke has enough patience and then some for the mage.
